grandMA2 NPU: Network Processing Unit for Large-Scale DMX and grandMA2 Systems
The grandMA2 NPU (Network Processing Unit) is a dedicated processing and DMX output node designed to expand the parameter capacity and DMX universe count of grandMA2 lighting control systems. Delivering the same real-time calculation performance as a grandMA2 console, it handles up to 4,096 HTP/LTP parameters and supports up to 65,536 parameters across a full grandMA2 network with up to 256 DMX universes.
Ethernet to DMX Conversion for Decentralized Networks
The NPU serves as the bridge between Ethernet-based lighting networks and DMX-controlled devices. It converts incoming Ethernet data into DMX output across eight independent 5-pin XLR DMX connectors, each configurable as either an input or output to suit the needs of the specific installation. This makes it a practical solution for large venues, touring productions, and any system where DMX devices need to be distributed across a network without running long DMX cable runs from a central console.
Scalable Processing Across Multiple Consoles
In a networked grandMA2 system, multiple consoles share the available NPU devices for distributed processing power. The NPU can be centrally positioned while MA xPort Nodes handle DMX distribution to individual fixtures, providing a redundant operating mode that keeps the system running if a single component goes offline. R90’s NPU units ship in pre-built racks that include opto splitters for clean, isolated DMX distribution. Pairs naturally with the grandMA2 Light and grandMA2 Full Size for large-scale networked systems where a single console’s parameter count isn’t enough.
Onboard Control and Connectivity
A 7-inch internal command touchscreen provides direct access to system information and configuration without requiring a separate console connection. Connectivity includes 1 etherCON port, 1 powerCON in and out, and 3 USB 2.0 connectors for peripheral devices and data transfer.
