Elation Proteus Excalibur: IP65 Beam Moving Head with Searchlight-Class Output

The Proteus Excalibur is what you rent when you need a beam that cuts through smoke, fog, fireworks residue, and open sky and keeps going. Elation built it to rival xenon searchlights and skytrackers in output and then put that output in a fully IP65-rated, automated moving head that weighs 108 lbs and runs on standard 100-240V power. The 0.8-degree beam projects from a 260mm front lens as a massive column of light visible at distance. At 200,000 lux at 20 meters and 7,500 lux at 100 meters, it is not subtle.

The Excalibur was debuted right here in Seattle, on the Space Needle‘s saucer roof for New Year’s Eve, where twelve units replaced the previous Proteus Hybrids and produced beams that, according to the production team, could be seen from Canada. That is a reasonable endorsement.

Searchlight Output, Moving Head Control

The Philips MSD Platinum 500 FLEX lamp runs at 550W and is dimmable via the internal ballast, with a Hibernation Mode that reduces power when the fixture is idle to extend lamp life toward the 4,000-hour rating. The Sky Motion standalone system allows pattern-based movement programming directly from the fixture display, making it usable for applications where a full console is not practical. Multiple fixtures can be interconnected with ID assignment for immediate access to synchronized movement patterns adjustable in size, speed, and color from the display.

Beam, Prisms, and Effects

The 0.8-degree beam expands to 3.5 degrees via the remote-controlled Expander lens for a wider, fatter aerial look. Dual rotating prisms with prism macros and a Dual Frost Filter hybrid wash effect allow the Excalibur to move beyond pure searchlight work into textured aerial FX. Eight rotating and indexing glass gobos plus 17 static stamped metal gobos add projection capability. High speed mechanical shutter and strobe complete the effects package.
